I think it's easier for percussion because it's easier, I think, to stay in key (mallet keyboards), and it's easier to stay in time.

I remember in highschool, my sister would bring our dad's electric guitar to some of our pep band shows, and work on some of the tunes she'd picked up. Occasionally I'd play along on drum set, keeping a beat, trying to stay in the style of whatever she was playing (rock, blues, jazz, shuffle, etc.). That's probably a bit easier than adlibbing a solo and making sure you stay in key.

It's not too late to learn. I've been trying to encourage Brian to pick up music again, but he is easily discouraged. You have to be prepared to be terrible while you're learning.
