Haven't you had laptop power issues before? It seems like everyone I know has had the power jack fail. (Except ours, we're next).
Permissions suck. Every time I used RSYNC or Subversion at work it would mess up permissions for someone. Samba was also a permissions nightmare. Of course the whole reason permissions were a problem is that we needed files to be accessible to multiple users for data analysis.
