Heh. I failed to notice that until someone pointed it out on another web site.

I didn't realize the kernel was specifically programmed to insert the leap second. I figured NTP would come along at some later point and say "hmm, the clock is behind" and adjust appropriately.

We had a programming assignment in high school regarding date processing, and several people (myself included) got points deducted for incorrectly determining what years were leap years. I didn't know about the "years ending in 00 are not leap years, unless they're evenly divisible by 400" rule. Oops.
