Maybe their thinking ahead to Utah and Northern Arizona where they marry 12 year old girls.

As a WI HS graduate, I remember being taught all about the horrible STDs and teen pregnancy and that not having sex was the best way to go. But in the "enlightened" north woods of WI, virginity after 11th grade was some sort of embarrassment. Too geeky/ugly/unpopular to get laid, or something.

Maybe I didn't hang with the right crowd, but for me, I wasn't even dating, nevermind going further while in high school. Others I knew were, but it always seemed to me that every male in the school pretty much ignored me unless they hated me. Oh, well... probably for the better. Better fish are found in a bigger pond.

As for what was taught, I remember the message being pretty much what Luke described. If you are sexually active you are likely to wind up pregnant or diseased, and that can ruin your life. Preventative measures were discussed, but I think the overall message was "you're better off not doing it".

Unfortunately I don't remember much of this from high school, but I think my experiences were similar. Not only was I not active, but I wasn't even dating. Nonetheless, while the cirriculum emphasized abstinence as being the safest, there was considerable attention given to other protective measures, especially condoms.

Then again, my parents took a very practical view of things, basically amounting to "Don't do it, but if you're going to, don't be stupid."

I got the "Don't do it, but if you're going to, don't be stupid." message about pretty much everything.

I idea of sex is Highschool wasn't considered that much. There was no way in hell I was taking a chance at pregnancy, getting caught, telling my mother...

There is a time and place for everything, and that place is college.

My senior yr in HS some girl took an anonymous survey of the 108 seniors in my class. 79% of the people in my class checked yes to having had sex. A full 90% of those were after age 16. The weird thing is, that included the entire spectrum of kids -- nerds like me and a portion of my friends, band geeks, popular kids, religious kids, stoner kids, and even the weird untouchable caste kids. I'd be willing to bet that the 20 or so kids who hadn't had sex were the really fundie ones. This, however, did not include the catholic girls.

And I'd bet that 20% of the 79% who said they had "sex" were either lying or heavily embellishing their adventures. I'd wager that many feared that the so-called anonymous survey might actually not be.

Or, maybe I'm just old and naive...

um... should I weigh in?

Four of my friends were pregnant in h.s by age 16. Three had babies, and one had an abortion.

I had enough sex-ed in the Madison schools by 8th grade to probably teach a health class. Maybe this has all gone the way of the dinosaurs since the 80's though.

I always heard the message, "Don't do it, and if you do use a condom and spermicide with nonoxonyl-9 to prevent HIV and other diseases."

I think I turned out just fine. And 2 of those 4 pregnancies were friends that didn't go to school in WI. They were from IL and moved here after the fact. And I went to school with 2000 kids, so 2 pregnancies isn't too bad.
