it seems to be something common to PA that people say gyro with a soft j sound. At least Ruppert's coworkers and people I know from Pittsburgh say it that way - and the people from PA have leaked this direction. The Bloys reported that people in their area say it that way too. I was very amused when we watched the Good Eats about gyros with the whole gyroscope comment because I had just mentioned that to Ruppert a few days before. No one I know says gyroscope with a hard g. I guess technically they should both be yroscope and yro, but the only actual person besides Alton Brown that I've heard say yro is Amy.

It was funny that the waitress said jyro. But at least she didn't seem fazed when we said gyro.

I always thought it was pronounced "hero." Unless you're from Connecticut, in which case it's pronounced "grinder."
