We just got one of these in Lexington a couple of years ago. Some love it and some hate it. It works well enough for me. I'm not sure if there have been an unusual number of accidents or not.

When I lived in upstate NY, there was a monster roundabout in our area, at least 150 feet across. So I guess I grew up used to the idea.

This is the first one (rather two) for me, other than those I've seen on vacation. From what I've heard, the accident rate is generally much *less* than normal intersections.

I wouldn't have called that a normal intersection....it was disaster waiting to happen on a daily basis. I've only been through there once and it was a bit confusing at first. Hopefully this will make things much more safe and less frustrating...

Yeah, like I said, it was a bit confusing the first few times (why are there arrows to turn left when you can only go right?), but once you understand how traffic moves, I think it works really well. Some people still don't know what to do, though.

I've been through there maybe half a dozen times, and after a bit of confusion the first time, it does indeed work very well. Maryanne is right: that intersection was just a disaster waiting to happen, and it needed something to help the situation.

Of course, I've never been through it at peak hour, so I don't know what it's like then.

We have quite a few of those around here... and I much prefer them to the intersections where 5 streets intersect without one (like the intersection near our apartment). They are generally just fine, but sometimes people don't pay attention to which lanes can turn right once you're in the circle, and that gets messy. We have lots of bisected traffic circles too, just to make things confusing.

Yeah, I don't understand the bisected ones.

Ours here are well marked and signed, so it's pretty clear what lane you should be in.
