Luke, sorry to hear about your grandfather. If it's any consolation, you're luckier than most having been that close to him. I also felt fortunate having such a strong bond with my grandfather. I learned so much about him and myself over the years, up to his three-year long illness and eventual death. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Howard George Fred Ahrndt CALEDONIA - Howard George Fred Ahrndt, 88, passed away at Lincoln Village Convalescent Center on Tuesday, September 23, 2003, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Howard was born in Caledonia on August 5, 1915, to Edward and Helen (nee: Patzke) Ahrndt. He was united in marriage to Eleanor Lindquist on November 14, 1942, in St. John's Lutheran Church. He graduated from Horlick High School in 1935. He worked on the family farm and at Massey Harris. In about 1947, he became an Insurance Agent for Farm Bureau. Howard later decided to start his own business, Ahrndt Insurance Agency. He and his wife maintained this business until their retirement in 1983. He was past President and Board Member of the Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin. He served on the board of the Caledonia-Mount Pleasant Memorial Park. He was a member of the Racine County Conservation League and was the first organization director of the Racine County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Fifth Street Yacht Club. He held numerous church offices at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. He held numerous offices while he was a member of the Dusty Road Runners. After his retirement, Howard and Eleanor camped and traveled extensively to many places including Alaska, Mexico, and the Southern United States in their recreational vehicles. He enjoyed deer hunting with his son, Gary, and grandsons, Jeremy and Ryan, until he was 84 years old. Howard had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved to tell jokes and was a great husband, father, and grandfather. He loved getting the family together for family gatherings. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Eleanor; his three children, Diane Ahrndt (fiance, Richard Apel), Joanne (Sylvester) Pacholski, and Gary (Lynette) Ahrndt; four grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda), Shannon, and Ryan Ahrndt and Luke Pacholski; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy Sorensen, Mandalee Kaplan, and Ellen (Maynard) Proefrock; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Harriet Lindquist, Wayne Lindquist, and Herman (Loretta) Pooch. Many nieces, nephews, friends, and best friend, Robert Gorman also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Pearl Makovsky, Marion Kayon, and Angeline Kovacik; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Christ Sorensen, Edward Makovsky, Louis Kaplan, Sylvester Kayon, John Kovacik, Kenneth Lindquist, and Beverly Lindquist. Funeral services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 4649 Lora Street, on Saturday morning, September 27, 2003, at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. Ted Gundlack officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. and at the church on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until time of services. Memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society have been suggested.
