Sorry to hear about your grandfather, Luke.

I've been to too many funerals already in my life, and every single one of them has been maddeningly superficial and rote, if not outright offensive. (And don't get me started on visitations.) So, no, you're not crazy.

Good for you for saying a little something. It sounds like it helped.

The thing is, when one of his sisters died a few years ago, it was totally different. Yes, there was a certain "by the books" aspect to things. But there was also a lot about her life, what she did at the church, etc.

Yes, my post was essentially a way of saying "I made the funeral worthwhile" without sounding like a *complete* egomaniac.

My grandfather's funeral was such an outpouring of love and emotion. And the place was always packed. Even after his third day waked, there was a line forming outside to view his body. I just hope my life can mean that much to people lives someday.

But sometimes, just like in life, it's about being/dying in the right place, and right time. And, unfortunately, in death, there are no do-overs. :)
